Rainbow trout caught fishing on the Tongariro River after fly fishing lessons

Planning Your Adventure Fly Fishing Taupo & Surrounds

You can enjoy unforgettable fly fishing in the Taupo region and surrounding waters year-round, from winter spawning runs of Rainbow and Brown trout to summer wilderness fishing in the upper reaches of remote river valleys.

We will take care of all your fly fishing requirements including food and drink while you are with your fishing guide each day, as well as collection and drop-off to your accommodation in Taupo, Turangi or anywhere in-between..

We have breathable waders and boots of all sizes, along with warmer neoprene waders for those who prefer ‘old-school’. Our guides provide all the gear you’ll need including flies, tippet and consumables those little extras.

You need to book your own accommodation and transport to Taupo and we have provided our recommendations to help you.

However, should you wish to use your own fishing gear you can check our Taupo trout fishing guides gear checklist which is quite comprehensive and might remind you of a few things you choose to bring yourself. It is not worth the problems of bringing fur or feathers, or waders as these will be stopped, checked and possibly delayed at Customs and MPI at the airport.  Felt-soled boots are BANNED.  We will provide all the fishing gear you need.

If you are planning your NZ fly fishing trip yourself then the following will help:

Before you leave home:

Insurance

You are responsible for your insurance and should note down if you may be rafting, tramping or travelling by helicopter while we guide you fishing around Taupo and other parts of New Zealand.  We recommend Sandra at Health and Travel Insurance Brokers who is an expert in travel insurance covering outdoor activities.  She works with a number of different companies and can get you great rates and comprehensive cover.

Health Requirements

Please notify us if you have any specific health concerns and be sure that you bring appropriate medicines, prescriptions and documentation should your health deteriorate while in New Zealand.  Taupo has medical facilities with a small hospital and the nearest large hospital is Rotorua which is 50 minutes away. Two key concerns for many clients are hayfever and sandfly bites. If either of these are an issue for you then bring hayfever meds and bug spray.

Domestic flights

When booking your international flights ask about transfers to Taupo airport as this is the most convenient way to get here.  Airport shuttles can bring you the few kms into Taupo to your accommodation.  For each day we are your fishing guide we will collect you and return you to your accommodation in Taupo.

Rental Cars

Search for Auckland airport rental cars in Google and you’ll find a lot of options, check their Google ratings and you’ll get a feel for the ones that offer great Kiwi service. The drive to Taupo can be 3-4 hours and if you’ve just flown in you should be sure to take breaks to remain safe and alert. Tirau is a popular town to stop in for a break as it has many cafes and a few interesting shops to look at.

Remember to check if you need any additional drivers licenses other than your home country one.

Campervan Hire

We recommend Your Kind of Camper. They are based in Auckland and provide quality Mercedes Benz Sprinter campers. We know the owners and can ensure they have a similar attitude to us – they personally care about every single client and will look after you.
