Taupo Fly Fishing Report 5 October 2013

Posted by admin on October 5, 2013

Yesterday (Friday) in Taupo was a stunning day in the Taupo district and we were fly fishing in t-shirts on the lower Tongariro. Spring is a great time around Taupo because there are more options as the lakes are open, and often there are fewer anglers.  There were only a couple of fishos out on the Reid and Bain pools yesterday and we had a ball with all anglers hooking up.  Many of the trout were darker with a few freshies thrown in around the 4 pound mark.

Kuratau and Otamangakau lakes are open and offer options for boat and shoreline fishing.  The photo below shows a nice opening day Brownie.  Lake Rotoaira is well stocked and always offers lots of action too.

Our pick of the local Taupo rivers is still the Tongariro at the moment.  It has heaps of trout in it and the flood from two weeks ago has changed many of the pools.  This offers new challenges to read the water and find where the trout are holding.  If you systematically cover the water you will find the jackpot and can often land four or more trout from the same drift.  The go-to nymph at the moment is the Green Caddis as the warm weather has stimulated alot of insect activity.

The Hinemaia has been a bit over-fished over the last few weeks and the Tauranga-Taupo needs another rain.  The Waitahanui had a good run of trout last weekend so fish the middle and upper pools on summer leaders and you will have some fun.  The mouth is also fishing well with anywhere between four and eight anglers there most evenings.

The weather up to Wednesday is meant to be good, with rain arriving around Thursday.  Slap on some sunscreen and get out in the sun. It really is a great time of year and there are plenty of trout around so get out and enjoy it.

Until next time, tight lines and good luck! Remember to send us any photos or stories via our Facebook page or Twitter account or Google+.
