Taupo Fly Fishing Report 24 December 2017

Posted by admin on December 24, 2017

The cicadas have been out, the weather’s been hot, and fishing in Lake Taupo and some of our favourite rivers has been brilliant. It’s a long way from Mississippi but these anglers were delighted with a number of Brown Trout caught on the Tongariro River.

The middle pools of the Tongariro have yielded some nice fish on a wet-line with small Woolly Buggers, and the beauty of this technique is that it works well in the middle of the day. The Blue Pool has just opened and in the upper river a long trace with a dry-fly dropper can get you into the action. Early afternoon is fishing well and if the evening stays calm try dragging Sporting Caddis’s on the surface.

Backcountry rivers such as the Whanganui and Mohaka tributaries have been a bit on and off, but this time of the year is great before they get more pressure later in the season. Be prepared to walk and cover water to find where the fish are holding, and don’t forget to fish at your feet before wading to reach the other side. We’ve seen a number of fish spooked in water of half a metre, with fish in the morning in particular holding close to the banks.

The Western Bays of Lake Taupo have been fishing well, both jigging from a boat with green and silver flies, as well as smelting in the stream mouths. It’s a great time of year and although there are a lot of holiday-makers, the Taupo fishery is so big and diverse there are always fishing options. Sometimes when you are forced to look for other options you can find new hotspots. Just get out there and have fun, or get in touch and let us show you.

We wish all clients and friends a Merry Christmas wherever you are around the world, and a safe and enjoyable new year.

Until next time, tight lines and good luck! Remember to send us any photos or stories via our Facebook page or Twitter account or Google+.
