Taupo Fly Fishing Report 13 September 2013

Posted by admin on September 12, 2013

It is shaping up as being the best weekend of fly fishing in the Taupo rivers this season.

The fly fishing has been great this week with lots of good quality fish being caught, with many trout in excess of 5lb, and a few in the 6-7lb bracket.  The Tongariro river has been in the best form we’ve seen for five years or more.  Many anglers are enjoying good strong fish in a lot of pools, and a number we have spoken to have stories of being broken off by silver bullets taking off down through rapids.

The other local rivers have also been fishing well with some nice fresh Westerlies pushing some big fresh fish up the Waitahanui  River.  The Hinemaia was fishing well but there have been a huge number of people tramping up and down it, so we have fished elsewhere this week.

Taupo had heavy rain overnight on Wednesday and all yesterday was misty rain.  The Tongariro River went from 24 cumecs to 260 in a matter of hours!  See the graph below.

As of Friday morning it’s a beautiful calm morning in Taupo with mist burning off to a sunny day with blue skies and next to no breeze.  Conditions are perfect to get out on any of the local rivers as the rain we’ve had will have brought literally hundreds of fresh trout up the rivers.

On the Tongariro river many of these fish will be in the Bridge pool and lower pools.  The Tongariro has a bit of colour but not murky which is perfect, and both nymphing and wetlining will do well.  The usual slayers will work well with a green or brown Woolly Bugger and small Glo-bugs.  As the water clears and the sun comes out try a few natural variations of Caddis and Mayfly.

The Tauranga Taupo will be in top form after this rain and as usual you will need to walk a bit to fish through as many pools as possible to find the jackpot.

Two points to note this week –

1 there is a major water release on the Tongariro river tomorrow (Saturday) – you can see more info at Tongariro River Rafting

2 The new season NZ-wide fly fishing licences are out and if you buy online you get it sent as a handy plastic card.

If there is any way you can knock off work early and get down to Taupo or Turangi, then this is the weekend to do it!!  Until next time, tight lines and good luck! Remember to send us any photos or stories via our Facebook page or Twitter account or Google+.
