Tongariro River Fly Fishing Guides – trout year round
Flowing through Turangi into southern Lake Taupo, the world famous Tongariro River offers unforgettable fly fishing for stunning trout year round. It is a gift we are all so incredibly lucky to enjoy.
In winter our Tongariro River fly fishing guides can get you into the renown spawning runs of both Rainbow and Brown Trout, while summer offers wilderness fishing in the beautiful upper reaches, and dry-fly sight-fishing to monster Browns lower down. Apart from the actual seasons, we find there are spawning Rainbows to catch from March right into December, and with the right conditions we can sight-fish to Browns and Rainbows any time. Learn more details about the different seasons for trout fishing in Taupo and the surrounding waters.
Many clients who only have a day while passing through Taupo or Turangi want to fish the Tongariro, often to tick it off their bucket-list. Other clients, such as some from Australia, want a day or two with a guide to learn or fine-tune their technique, and then they plan to fish more days on their own.
Our fly fishing guides have over 70 years combined experience fishing up and down the Tongariro River in all seasons. We can make the most of your time employing a range of techniques based on the conditions, from traditional Kiwi nymphing and wetlining, to Skagit, Czech-nymphing and Cicada-droppers.
Many clients comment that not only did they love the trout they caught, but also the new techniques learnt as well.
If you only have a day to fish, we will help you make the most of it, and if you’ve got more then even better as we show you the secrets of this stunning river. We provide all gear, transport and a hearty packed lunch.
