New Zealand is fast becoming famous for some of the most exciting and most accessible saltwater fly fishing in the world.
Just two hours south of Auckland and two hours north of Taupo, Tauranga harbour is an incredible hunting ground for a range of shallow water predators – you can even fish it if you have arrived on a Cruise Ship for a day!
The yellowtail kingfish is probably the most sought-after species on the Tauranga flats, often being hooked in only a metre of water. Whether finding them alongside stingrays or, like a permit, with their tails high as they forage below, they are possibly the truest test of the saltwater fly angler’s resolve and skill. Like a giant trevally a fight with a kingi is arm-cramping and if it all goes well, their unimaginable beauty is something to behold.
The Tauranga harbour flats hold a range of other stunning species to challenge your fly fishing skills, including snapper, kahawai (Australian salmon) and silver trevally. Stalking and spotting these fish from our purpose-built flatwater fly fishing boat is an amazing experience, which may include encounters with stingrays and schools of fish breaking the surface in feeding frenzies.
