Trout Fishing Turangi & Taupo – a day with a guide
Many clients only book one day of trout fishing with our fly fishing guides, and our job is to make the absolute best use of that time for you. Whether you are staying in Turangi or Taupo we’ll always take you to the waters we believe will give you the best possible chance of success, based on the current conditions, your experience and your personal wishes.
Rivers flowing into Lake Taupo that we fly fish include the Waitahanui, Hinemaia, Tauranga-Taupo and the world-famous Tongariro. If you are in Taupo or Turangi we can have you at fishing pools in 15 minutes, or if you don’t mind a longer drive then some clients want a wilderness backcountry fly fishing experience for their day which is no problem either.
Many clients who only have a day while passing through Taupo or Turangi want to fish the Tongariro River, often to tick it off their bucket list. Other clients, such as some from Australia, want a day fly fishing with a guide to learn or fine-tune, and then they plan to fish more days on their own.
The Tongariro River has a huge range of waters from willow-lined slow deep pools, to rushing boulder strewn reaches. Local knowledge and safety is key, and within one day you can enjoy a few different experiences fly fishing with your guide, and even land both Rainbow and Brown trout.
Sometimes with clients from Taupo who only have a day, we might fish the winter spawning runs of the Hinemaia River which is a 15 minute drive from town and offers big hard fighting Rainbow trout in a moderate flow of water with not too much walking. In summer a nearby backcountry experience to be had in a day is the Waipunga River which offers stunning scenery as you walk up the river and cast to trout you can see in feeding in pools.
Our guides have over 120 years combined experience fly fishing up and down the rivers around Taupo and Turangi in all seasons. We can make the most of your limited time employing a range of techniques based on the conditions, from traditional Kiwi nymphing and wetlining, to Skagit, Czech-nymphing and Cicada-droppers.
Many clients comment that not only did they love the trout they caught, but also the new techniques learnt as well.
If you only have a day to fish, we will help you make the most of it. We provide all gear, transport and a hearty packed lunch. Please contact us to discuss your plans.
