Tongariro River fly fishing – a day with a guide
World-famous Tongariro River offers unforgettable fly fishing year-round. In winter we have the renowned spawning runs of rainbow and brown trout. Summer offers wilderness fishing in the beautiful upper reaches of remote valleys, dry-fly sight-fishing and fly fishing monster browns lower down.
Many clients who only have a day while passing through Taupo or Turangi want to fish the Tongariro, often to tick it off their bucket list. Other clients, such as some from Australia, want a day with a guide to learn or fine-tune, and then they plan to fish more days on their own.
Our guides have over 80 years combined experience fly fishing up and down the Tongariro River in all seasons. We can make the most of your limited time employing a range of techniques based on the conditions, from traditional Kiwi nymphing and wetlining, to Skagit, Czech-nymphing and Cicada-droppers.
Many clients comment that not only did they love the trout they caught, but also the new techniques learnt as well.
If you only have a day to fish, we will help you make the most of it. We provide all gear, transport and a hearty packed lunch from a local catering company. Please contact us to discuss your plans.
We can customise any trip according to your personal preferences and experience. The New Zealand Fly Fishing Company provide all the gear, food and drink, and collect and return you to Taupo or Turangi.
