9 May Taupo Flyfishing Report

Posted by admin on May 9, 2011

Last weeks rains brought some good fresh run quality Rainbows and Browns into the local Taupo system. There were uncomfirmed reports of a 10 1/2 lb Bow and a 9 pound Brown caught by early birds flyfishing the Tongariro river last week.  This is a great result for those willing to make the effort to get out on the receding levels very early in the morning. The Taupo region lakes continue to fish really well with some very active feeding with the cooling winter temperatures.

Stillwater rainbow

Last week for the back country and the backend Mayfly activity was nothing short of spectacular.  When the weather was condusive there were lots of big fish hard on the chomp.

The river mouths have been awsome over in the Western Bays with big numbers and quality fish and hardly any anglers in sight.  The Taupo mouths have had Easterlies for ages now and are a lot harder, but still showing odd squirts of quality fish coming through,

There is a great deal of snow on the mountains now, stunning scenery everywhere in "God's Country" so bring on the winter !!!
