13 April Taupo Flyfishing Report

Posted by admin on April 13, 2011

Some of the best backend fly fishing I can remember !!!  This last two weeks have been insane.
We had our friend Johnny Schuster out from the States again for a two week Trophy hunting bonanza.

Big NZ backcountry rainbow trout

Straight off to an 11lb Brown on the jungle, then a four day heli trip into the top of one of our most stunning rivers.

Fourty fish for four days!!! And an average weight of 7-8lb topping with a stunning 11lb true back country Brown taken on the big Coney just on dark.

Straight off the heli and a trophy bonanza on our favourite still water, stripping big woollies hard and fast all day producing a string of huge Bows and monster Browns.  One of the best trips ever !!! Check out our NZ Flyfishing YouTube channel for another all action video.

The days are getting shorter now and the fish are just starting to run the local rivers, with some huge Browns entering the system.  I called in the local river mouth on the way home today to find a huge Brown just sitting in the river at the car park, right in front of my truck. Only got the 5 weight Cheq nymph rod strung up.  2 minutes later I've hooked him and he's off out back to the lake at turbo speed, motorists were stopping and running along the lake edge kicking off their shoes and rolling up their trousers to help land this fish, finally netted him at 8LB !!!!

Carpark capture
Gotta love Taupo !!!!
